BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION

Plastic, in many of its forms, is a material that has been used to great effect in the health sector, revolutionised safe food storage, and even supported the growth of renewable energy from wind turbines and solar panels.

However, the convenience of single use plastics in our day to day lives has led to one of the greatest global environmental challenges. Oceans are being used as a dumping ground, city storm drains are clogged with waste exacerbating floods and spreading disease, and when consumed by livestock or fish, plastic also makes its way into the food chain that leads to our plates.

So what can you do? Use your voices & choices to bring about much-needed change!

take action

Join us and our Plastic Free July tribe in taking action to #EndPlasticPollution!

This month people all over the world will be amplifying the call to break free from plastic, and helping millions become part of the solution to the plastic pollution crisis.

Each week during Plastic Free July we will be unlocking a new challenge for you to take action! Use the Digital Action Toolkit to unlock the new resources and calls to action each week.

Log each challenge you complete, and receive a certificate from the African Climate Reality Project for every action you take! The first ten climate champions to complete ALL of the weekly challenges will receive a special climate-friendly surprise as a small token of our appreciation for your inspiring work in taking the #LeadOnClimate.

Use the toolkit to:

  • Unlock the weekly challenges for Plastic Free July
  • Sign & share the petition to call on Coca-Cola to step up their ambition and commitment for a World Without Waste
  • Tell your #BeatPlasticPollution story
  • Take action to reduce and remove plastic pollution from your home
  • Show solidarity with your fellow climate activists

It’s time to take action to #EndPlasticPollution for good!

Engage your local supermarket

Engage a local grocery store or supermarket to significantly reduce the amount of single-use plastics used on products in their store, and to lead us towards a plastic free future by taking decisive action!

We have drafted a template letter that you can download, and either hand this over to a store manager when doing your shopping, or send it in an email to the head office.

  1. Make the necessary edits where highlighted, and add in some local examples;
  2. Print it out and deliver the letter to your local store manager OR send it by email;
  3. Take a picture of you handing the letter over to the store manager OR take a screenshot of the sent email;
  4. Log your action and upload these pictures here to receive a certificate!

ENGAGE YOUR LOCAL government

Did you know that by law, local governments and municipalities are obligated to keep our public spaces safe, clean and free from plastic pollution? Take action to hold our elected representatives accountable to their communities!

We challenge you to take the #LeadOnClimate by engaging your local governments or municipalities to improve waste management service delivery, support the capacity building of and providing safe jobs for existing informal waste pickers, and introduce a ban or levy on single-use plastic items!

For this action, you can either deliver the below template letter as an individual, or team up with members of your community and fellow Climate Reality Leaders to send a collective letter and create an even bigger impact. Should you wish to do so in this way and need assistance in contacting Climate Reality Leaders and fellow climate activists in your region, please get in touch with our Regional Coordinators.

We have drafted a template letter that you can download and either hand over at the office of your local government or municipality, or send it via email.

  1. Fill in the details in the highlighted areas, and add in some local examples.
  2. Print it out and deliver the letter to your local municipality OR attach the letter document to an email.
  3. Take a picture of you handing the letter over to the municipality OR take a screenshot of the sent email;

Solutions to climate change do not only come from research centers and laboratories but also through innovation by the people most affected.
