Solly Motaung
Solly Motaung, a talented bass-baritone singer, was born in Hammanskraal, near Pretoria. His passion for music began at a young age, where he excelled in school choirs and frequently received solo parts during competitions. In his matric year, Solly auditioned for The Black Tie Ensemble’s Incubator Scheme and began his studies in 2012 under the guidance of Eric Muller.
During his three years of study, Solly participated in numerous Gauteng Opera productions and concerts, contributing to opera choruses and joining school tours directed by Marcus Desando.
In 2014, Solly performed in Gauteng Opera’s production of Cosi fan Tutte. In 2015, he appeared in the ensemble for Forté in Concert at the Linder Auditorium and made his opera debut as Dr. Granville in La Traviata at the Wits Great Hall. He also performed in the South African opera production Cula Mzansi at the Soweto Theatre and South African State Theatre.
In 2016, he took on the role of Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore at the Joburg Theatre and placed third in the Voices of South Africa International Singing Competition. He also performed Marcello in La Bohème at the Joburg Theatre and Durban Playhouse in 2017.

Solly participated in masterclasses offered by esteemed professionals such as Prof. Kamal Khan, Jeremy Silver, David Cowland, and Elaine Kidd. In 2018, he was part of staged opera scenes by the Royal Opera House in collaboration with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
In 2019, he performed in Gauteng Opera’s Opera Scenes, portraying roles such as Colas in Bastien und Bastienne, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte. Later that year, he reprised his role as Marcello in La Bohème with the Lowveld Chamber Music Association, directed by Magdalene Minnaar. He continues to refine his craft with Carla Pohl as his voice teacher.
