Phenye Modiane

Phenye Modiane was born in Ga-Rankuwa, where his passion for music began in church. His exceptional singing talent was discovered by a school teacher, Mrs. J.C. Motshwane, at Modiri High School. In 2002, he represented the North West province in the Tirisano School Choral Eisteddfod (now known as SASCE).

Phenye earned his BTech Degree in Vocal Art at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in 2006. During his time at TUT, he performed in productions such as Un giorno di Regno (as Conte Ivrea) and Gianni Schicchi (as Gherrardo).

In 2011, Phenye sang the role of El Ramendado in Carmen and, in 2012, portrayed Ugqayinyanga 1 (Guard 1) in the premiere of Ziyankomo, both produced by Opera Africa. He continued to take on notable roles, including Ferrando in Cosi fan Tutte (2014), Alfredo in La Traviata (2015), Dia!kwain in Words of a Broken String, and Imbongi in Hani as part of the Cula Mzansi production by Gauteng Opera.

In 2016, he performed Cula Mzansi at the State Theatre and the First Priest in Die Zauberflöte at the Joburg Theatre. The following year, he played Beppe in Rita and Rodolfo in La Bohème at both the Joburg Theatre and Durban Playhouse, produced by Gauteng Opera.

In May 2019, he performed at the Malmö Opera Theatre in Sweden during the Star For Life fundraising concert. He continues to perform, produce concerts and productions, and mentor artists through teaching and coaching.

Phenye is the Founder and Managing Director of Johannesburg Opera NPC, introduced to the public on 1 December 2019 with a Christmas Concert.
