It is no longer news that today’s environment is being polluted and degraded mostly by anthropogenic activities.  Having known this fact let us delve straight into the theme of World Environment Day – Beating Plastic Pollution.

Pollution is an undesirable change in the quality of the environment, rendering it unsuitable and dangerous to human and animal life and other organisms.

There was an awareness march to enlighten the public about the importance of sustaining a healthy environment and the rising dangers of plastic wastes.
There were also lectures, talks and brief seminars.

Plastic pollution is a result of excess littering of plastic products in the environment, especially in drainage systems and water run ways that eventually lead to large bodies of water, contaminating and endangering aquatic life. If burnt, it releases harmful and toxic particulates and aerosols due to it’s chemical composition.

Because plastic products are quite durable and affordable, and because of the sheer volume at which it is currently used, it’s continuous production seems inevitable due to the teeming world population demand.

Most of these plastic wastes are persistent in our environment due to their chemical compositions, making them resistant to natural ways of decomposition, and can stay intact for hundreds  of years on Earth’s surface.

We can reduce this plastic pollution to the barest minimum if only….

¤ We can conduct a wide awareness campaign in both rural and urban areas on the dangers of plastic pollution in the environment

¤ Anytime we are tempted to buy a disposable plastic product, we should  always ask ourselves questions such as:

  • Do I absolutely need this?
  • Can I use something else that I already have?
  • Should I buy something that I can use for a long term instead?
  • Is there an environmentally friendly alternative?

¤ We can always carry our reusable bags to the shopping malls and markets instead of accumulating more plastic bags that always ends up being discarded in the environment

¤ We can use recyclable and refillable bottles for drinking water

¤ We can reuse plastic containers for storage of beverages, leftover food or ingredients in our homes

¤Always make sure that you dispose plastics in the appropriate bins provided for easy collection and recycling

¤Adopt the three R’s of Environmental Waste Management Methods which are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”.

It is my belief that together we can secure our future by saving our environment today.
