On Africa Day 2019, 25 May,  I joined many other African Climate Reality Project volunteers in taking climate action for Africa. I carried out two activities, both aimed at tackling climate change and encouraging others to take action. The two activities were carried out at the library in Meru County, Kenya, and involved 18 primary school pupils and two library staff.

The first activity was a climate change presentation aimed to raise awareness of the climate crisis amongst the pupils. During this activity, I explained to the pupils what climate change is, using both English and Kiswahili languages. We also discussed the causes of climate change, and its negative impacts to our local environment, and the entire globe.

Titus and the pupils discuss the climate crisis – and what they can do about it.

Climate change can seem like a vague or abstract concept to some, so we spoke about some of the signs of climate change through the environmental impacts it has in our local area, and how our community – especially the youth – can act to tackle and fight the causes and impacts of climate change.

I encouraged the pupils to ask any questions or raise any comments they had about climate change and its impacts, from anything they have learnt from school, parents, or the media. Several of the pupils joined in the discussion, in particular a group of three Grade 8 pupils that said they had been told about climate change by teachers in their schools.

To end off the discussion on climate change and what we can do about it; we got our hands dirty with some tree planting. I donated 30 tree seedlings from my small home nursery to be planted in the library compound, and both pupils and staff got involved.

Often I bring along my seven-year old twin daughters, Blessy and Barbra, to tree planting activities, but they were at a family function on Africa Day – although they work with me in my tree nursery, so they are always taking action for a green environment and future!
