On October 13, 2017 the African Climate Reality Project held a school debate at Randfontein Secondary School, situated in Randfontein, Gauteng province, South Africa. The debate was organised as part of the Climate Change School Awareness campaign organised by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) from October 10 to 18.

The debate was aimed at promoting climate change literacy among learners and engaging them on the challenges at hand.

The student debated on which of renewable energy or nuclear energy would be the best energy source for South Africa’s sustainable development. Renewable energy is becoming a global priority, and a feasible option in both developed and developing countries.

The debate consisted of two teams of four learners, each team having 5 min to present its argument to defend its proposition, 5 min to raise questions to the argument presented by the other team and 5 min to rebut the points of information raised and conclude its argument.
